Trailer For Chris Smith’s Documentary ‘Collapse’ Now Online.

Here we go. This is what we need. Another doomsday documentary to scare the crap out of us all. I’m normally not one to jump all over these sorts of things. I saw Michael Moore’s Sicko, I watched Religulous, I am familiar with this type of documentary film making. It’s intensely convincing, but, the fact of the matter is, they are all just movies. Movies are not reality, they are manipulated and mediated and reflections of the ideals of those who are making them, especially in the realm of documentaries. What intrigued me so much about this one though, is the fact that the trailer itself asks all the questions I was wondering. The film concerns the story of Michael Ruppert, a police officer turned independent reporter who predicted the current financial crisis in his self published newsletter. Whether or not this guy is full of it, or if there is some honest credibility to what he’s saying seems to be the focus of the picture, as well as what he “predicts” will happen in the future. That is where it gets unnervingly bleak. Director Chris Smith has won critical acclaim over the past years with other documentary films such as American Movie and The Yes Men, and if the trailer is any indication, Collapse, too, will certainly please his critics. Check the trailer above.

Also, a clever little mash-up between this film and Roland Emmerich’s 2012, another doomsday picture this year, has been included in a link below. I would suggest taking a gander at this after you watch the Collapse trailer, it made me laugh pretty hard and really seems to legitimize how absurd and out of hand these doomsday movies are getting.
