My Five Favorite Christmas Movies
It’s Christmas eve, and tonight I’ll likely be watching a slew of classic holiday movies getting ready for tomorrow morning, forcing myself into the holiday spirit, trying to recall some of the magic and mystery I felt as a child. It takes a pretty astonishing movie to do that, and I’ve compiled a list here of films that I feel bring the wonder back to this time of year. Being a child of the 90s, many of these are more recent. Things like A Christmas Story and Christmas Vacation simply don’t have as much of an effect on me. It’s not because they’re bad movies by any means, but simply because the sentimental attachment isn’t there (unlike my uncle, who I’m sure will be watching the Christmas Story marathon all day tomorrow). The films on this list are films that are special to me, and they are in no way based on some sort of critical judgment of their quality. I love these movies with all my heart, and I’m sure many of you have some favorites as well. Feel free to comment with your own picks!!!
5) The Nightmare Before Christmas
Cliche, I know, but I have incredibly fond memories of watching this one every year at my grandparent’s house as we waited to open gifts after dinner. Sadly, the following it’s acquired over the past few years has really kind of turned me off of it. Call me whatever you like, but I get really annoyed when I see Jack Skellington lunch boxes sold at Hot Topic. Oh corporate America, you will never stop disappointing me.
4) Frost The Snowman
Oh how I miss the days when I used to come in from a long day of sledding on the hill behind my neighbors house, have my mom make me a cup of hot cocoa, and sit in front of the fire watching this absolutely heartwarming animated tale.
3) A Muppet Christmas Carol
The Muppets. ‘Nuff said.
2) Gremlins
Speaking of memories, this is one that brings on a flood of childhood reminiscence. I believe it was my oldest sister who showed me this one so many years ago, and it’s because of her that I’ve watched it every Christmas since. Truly a classic, and it helps that the main character shares my name =)
1) Home Alone/Home Alone 2
For almost any child that grew up in the 90s, Chris Columbus’ two Home Alone movies reign supreme as the most hysterical, most memorable, and downright greatest Christmas films that were ever produced. I can’t even begin to tell you how many traps I tried to set for my sisters after watching this movie, and how many times I reenacted Macaulay Culkin’s aftershave scream. To this day, I can’t go through a year without having seen both of these films at least once.
