Fresh Footage From Giallo Flick ‘Amer’

The giallo cult is a European phenomenon dating all the way back to the early 60s. The slick and stylish camerawork and excessive bloodletting of the early giallo films defined an entire genre, and the mood and tone of these psychological horror flicks were usually just as important as the stories themselves. Last year at Sitges, young directors Bruno Forzani and Helene Cattet took the festival by storm with their neo-giallo film Amer, praised for its ability to flawlessly capture the characteristics which made the genre so awesome in the first place. Delving deep into madness and paranoia, Amer looks like one of the best horror films to come out of Europe in years. BloodyDisgusting have just released the first of three clips which can be found below. I’ve also included the full theatrical trailer and the teaser trailer, both of which capture the essence of giallo horror in a way I can’t even begin to describe. Take a look for yourself and embrace the awesomeness the is Amer.

Desire has always been linked to one’s look. And cinema too. Luis Buñuel knew that very well when he filmed the shot of a razor over an eye with a detail shot. Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani recover this image in an experimental film with immaculate style. Someone watches a girl through a keyhole. The wind lightly lifts a woman’s skirt as a group of men look on. The fantasy of a dress tearing. Composed of fragments -of eyes, lights, shadows, gestures— and without dialogues, Amer delves into the life of Ana, always halfway between the real and the imaginary. A film of sensations, always shot skin-deep.
