Trailer For Spike Jonze’s New Indie Short
A few days ago I caught news of a new image from Spike’s new short film entitled I’m Here, an odd and apparently very indie robot love story sponsored by Absolut Vodka. Why Absolut Vodka you ask? I have no idea, but somebody has to pay for it. The half hour short will premiere at Sundance tonight at 8:30, and the reason I held off posting any news on it until now was because I assumed a proper trailer would soon be on its way. Well, I was right. The trailer is finally here and it looks pretty sweet. Spike is pretty much the quintessential American Indie filmmaker at this point, catering to a generation of skinny jean wearing hipsters who love Broken Social Scene and fixed gear bicycles. And he does this extremely well. Personally, I love all of Spike’s films, dating all the way back to his music video and skating days. He is exposing Hollywood to a new movement of American film whose audience actually admires the emotion and artistic value rather than how much money it cost to make or how many explosions go off during the course of a film. He also strives to expose his viewers to ideas and imagery that can’t be found in Spin magazine or at Urban Outfitters, encouraging them to dig deeper and go beyond what they can only see on the surface of this trend (for the record, I am a skinny jean wearing hipster, I hold no prejudices against anyone). So here’s to the trendy-as-hell Spike Jonze movies, and hoping that there are many more to come.
There’s no official synopsis for the new short yet, but I will keep an eye out for news tomorrow morning after the film has screened. Apparently, Los Angeles indie rockers Moonrats make an appearance in the film as a fictional band called The Lost Trees. Rumor has it that Spike is now dating one of the band members. Check out the trailer below, it’s covered in Abslolut Vodka sponsorship and even features their slogan at the end (reminiscent of the Tim and Eric sketches), but hey, like I said, he’s gotta find money for these projects somewhere.
