When Sundance rolls around that means a whole bunch of other festivals around the country will be screening the awesome films that the folks at Sundance pass up for lack of budget/experience/overall sense of elitism. Coming up on the 30th in Seattle is the 5th annual Science Fiction and Fantasy Short Film Festival, and from the looks of it, it’s going to be awesome. The list of films on this years program are fantastic, and will be shown in two different blocks of screenings, both of which are two hours long including ten films each. If I had any way of getting to Seattle by the 30th, you can bet your ass I’d be there. With a new wave in sci fi fast approaching, it’s festivals like this where the next Duncan Jones’ or Neil Blomkamp’s will reveal themselves. Check out the release below directly from the EMPSFM website.
EMP|SFM in partnership with SIFF will present the fifth annual Science Fiction + Fantasy Short Film Festival on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at the Seattle Cinerama Theater. The festival brings together industry professionals in filmmaking and the genres of science fiction and fantasy to encourage and support new, creative additions to science fiction and fantasy cinema arts.
And so to celebrate, I’ve come across one of the festival’s shorts over at QuietEarth available to view in its entirety on Vimeo. It’s pretty rough around the edges, being a student project and all, but despite a script that needs some reworking and relatively lackluster direction, the visual effects and concept behind this little flick are pretty interesting. Take a look at the synopsis below, and check out the full movie at the bottom of the post.
In the year 2210, humankind is faced with one option for survival: move to outer space. The most precious of Earth’s natural resources have been depleted; the planet has been ripped apart by war and natural disasters. Survival of the fittest has transformed into survival of the luckiest when a family gets last minute tickets to board the Space Station: Humanity.
